Dear Sir,
At the urgent request of Mrs Elizabeth Thompson Who is a very Loyal Woman and Whose Family rendered very important services to Government during the [illegible] & Revolutionary Wars in America, I enclose an Affidavit taken before me, the object of which is to defeat her late Son in laws claim for remuneration to a House which was burnt by the Enemy in this [town?] during the late War. the fact is that R. Campbell’s only claim to the house in question was his possession and that he was a Tenant at will, [and] I believe generally known to most of the old inhabitants of this [town?].
Mrs Thompson is now reduced to poverty & [illegible] through the profligacy of Mr Robt Campbell and she hopes the Honorable the Commissioners will reject
To James B McCauley Esquire
Secretary etc etc
reject his claim for the House Which she understands he has alleged to have been his property.
[illegible]
Respectfully
Your Humble Servant

Client sworn says she had 3 houses in Niagara—2 on lot No 28, does not know which was best, one was rented to a Mr Wilcox, the used by her Son in Law, Robt Campbell–never recd any rent & the value was £25 per Annum. Valued all the 3 houses at £65 per annum. That they were all built before her daughter’s marriage to Campbell. That she never gave one of the houses to R Campbell. That she had intended it, but he behaved so ill, and proved himself so unworthy that she relinquished the idea. She declares that all of the buildings for which she claims were actually & bona fide owned by herself at the time of the loss and long before and no part by Campbell
