Women's War Loss Claims in Upper Canada

View Fullscreen

This map displays spatial data for 166 claims to the Board of Claims for Losses submitted or administered by female inhabitants of Upper Canada.

There are 38 townships represented here but the distribution is highly skewed. Half of the townships include only a single claim.

The top five townships include over 53% of claims:

  1. Niagara (37 claims)
  2. Stamford (19 claims)
  3. York (12 claims)
  4. River Thames (10 claims)
  5. Sandwich (10 claims)

This distribution shows the primary regions in which battles, occupation, and looting occurred during the War of 1812. Major invasions in the Niagara and Western Districts resulted in higher losses along the Niagara, Detroit, and Thames Rivers. An American raid in 1813 incurred losses for inhabitants of York Township.

In total, female inhabitants of the Niagara District have the highest representation in this dataset, having submitted or administered 89 of 166 (53.6%) claims made to the board. For more on these claims, see the detailed map of the Niagara District.

For further discussion of women who made and administered claims to the board, see Module 3: Coping with War.
